the annual general meeting of Phibsboro Chess Club took place in the club rooms in the An Óige Headquarters Mountjoy St. D7 on Monday 11th September 2006. The meeting started at 8-45 pm with twenty one members present. The Chairman Anthony Duffy opened the meeting. He thanked everyone for attending the meeting, and the committee for all the hard work they put into running the club for the past year. He congratulated Stephen Brady winning the Irish chess championship for the fifth time, and the A team on winning the Branagan cup. He also congratulated the winners and runner ups in each of the five sections of the club championship, the summer competition and the Christmas lightning competitions, and the controllers for the Trojan work they put into running these competitions. He also stated that their was a change in the playing rules for the leagues next season, that adjournments were abolished, and all league games would have to be played to a finish in one session and the secretary would be covering these changes in his report. He said that according to our constitution he could serve for one more year but after that he would not be putting his name forward for committee. Anthony then asked the Secretary to read the minutes of the previous Annual General Meeting which were proposed by Tim Conlan and seconded by Peter Jackson and adopted by all present. Secretary’s report First of all I wish to welcome everybody attending the meeting this evening, and to thank the member and the committee for the support and co-operation they gave to the club, and my self, keeping this club functioning properly over the past year. We entered five teams in the leagues this year with mixed results. 2 Armstrong Cup 1 Heidenfeld 1 O’Hanlon and 1 BEA team. The final rounds of the Leinster leagues were played in the Teachers Club over the weekend of the 11th and 12th of March 2006 The Armstrong cup A team finished in 4th place and the B team were relegated to the Heidenfeld division, our Heidenfeld team was also relegated to the Ennis Shield division, The O’Hanlon team finished well up in 4th place and the BEA team finished in second last place. This means that for the new 2006/07 season the club can enter a team in every division in the Leinster leagues. I would like to thank the team captains for the difficult job they do, keeping their teams performing during the year. In the 2005 European Team Championship’s which were played in Italy the team performed very well the scores were: S Brady 3 / 7, J Joyce 2.5 / 7, R O'Donovan 3 / 7, K Butler 1.5 / 7, T Brezing 2 / 6, D Salter 2 / 6, Congratulations to the A team, captained by Stephen Brady on winning the Branagan cup, and our Killane shield team were knocked out on a tie break in the second round. As usual our club members had some very fine performances in outside competitions. Congratulation once again to Stephen Brady on winning the 2006 Irish Championship and becoming Irish champion for the 5th time, Stephen also won a board prize in the Armstrong Cup, Tom Fitzpatrick shared 1st place in Kilkenny with a score of 5 points out of 6, and Noel Duffy won a grading prize in Cork. As these are the only results that I received I must apologise if anybody had a result that is not recorded. The club championship was a great success this year, with 40 members entering it, we had 5 sections with 8 players in each section on an all play all basis and the entrance fee was €5. We had joint winners in the senior section this year with John Joyce and Stephen Brady sharing first place, the intermediate section was won by Anthony Duffy, with Giles King-Salter and Michael Delaney sharing second place, in the junior section we had joint winners with Edward Martin and Michael Germaine, the Div.4 section was won by Justin Mulrooney with Brendan Byrne and Pat Gleeson sharing second place and the Div 5 section was won by Martin O’Donoghue with Terry Kernan in second place. The summer competition was won by Herbert Scarry with Tom Fitzpatrick in second place and the board prize went to Justin Mulrooney. The Christmas lightening was held in the club on Thursday 15th December 2005 at 8pm and a good night was had by all, an 8 round Swiss system controlled by M Germaine and T Duffy was won by Jan Zvolanek. And Christmas presents were given to the staff of An Óige for the help and cooperation they showed to us over the year. The Leinster Chess Championship was run by M Germaine in the club premises on the 27th 28th 29th December 2005. Conor Gilmer has taken over the running of Phibsboro chess club web site which was started by Kieran English, anybody who wishes to have items placed on it should contact Conor. Six new mechanical clocks were purchased through the LCU at €40 each. It was agreed that associate membership would only apply to players who were fully paid up members of other chess clubs, but who wished to call into Phibsboro chess club for the occasional game. All other members would have to pay the fees agreed at the 2005 A.G.M. These are as follows; Full membership- €140 plus ICU fee of €30, retired and student members €100 plus ICU fee of €18. The committee would look at the fees of members in special cases of hardship if requested. The club has re opened again for Monday and Thursday night play from Thursday last 7th September 2006. The secretary was informed from the manager of An Óige that our club nights were secured for the 2006/2007 season. The following motion was passed at the AGM of the ICU, held on Sunday 3rd September. "That all ICU rated games must be played to a finish in one session" the implication is that for games to be rated by the ICU, there can be no adjournments. The I C U also increased fees from €30 to €35 for the coming Season. The LCU held an EGM on Monday 4th September to discuss, if the LCU should apply for the Armstrong Cup and the Heidenfeld trophy sections of the leagues to be FIDE rated, and to have no more adjournments in the leagues to facilitate this change, and to change the sections on adjournments in the LCU rules. After a lengthy debate the meeting voted to have no more adjournments in the Leinster leagues, and apply for FIDE ratings, These changes mean that for senior matches in the leagues, clocks will have to be started at 7.15 pm sharp and all moves made in 2 hours per player. And all the other leagues start at 7.30 pm sharp and all moves made in 1 hour 45 minutes per player. The LCU is to have the new rules out to all secretaries before the start of the leagues. The secretary would like to thank Tim Conlan for taking the minutes of the meetings, and Peter Jackson for coming down early and setting up the equipment so that matches can start on time. And finally I would like to wish every member the best of luck for the coming season. The treasurer’s report - Tony Mooney presented his report to the club. After reading his report he announced that the club was in a good financial position and there would be no increase in our fees for the coming year, however the ICU have increased their standard adult fees from €30 to €35 and the old age pensioners unemployed and the under eighteen fees to €20 and the under twelve year olds to €15.
