Michael Delaney RIP

Michael Delaney passed away on Bank Holiday Monday. Michael was a very active member of our club, playing matches in Armstrong, Heidenfeld and Ennis Shield over many many years. He previously played Chess in Sutton, Portmarnock and Kevin Barry. In March, despite his illness, he played a home game just before the suspension of all chess leagues. Michael was Irish Braille Chess Champion on a number of occasions and represented Ireland internationally, not only in Chess but at the para-Olympics, on three occasions, in Atlanta ’96, Sydney 2000 and Beijing 2008,  in Cycling, Athletics, Long and High Jump. He will be missed by all of us in Phibsboro Chess Club. We extend our deepest sympathy to Michael’s, family and friends.

Wins for Heidenfeld and Ennis sides

Good results for our sides in their first matches after the Christmas break.

The Heidenfeld side won 5-3 against Bray/Greystones, wins for Luka, Conor, and Colm, and draws for Kevin, John, Marc, and Art.

Our Ennis side won against Rathmines 4-2, with wins for John, Tom, and Algamantas, and draws for Mick D., and Fergal

While the results were good, it is difficult to have two matches on the same night, making it harder if more substitutes were needed for either side. Perhaps this should be avoided if possible next season.
